In his oils as in his watercolours Don enjoys depicting the fall of light on buildings
as well as on landscapes. Once again, his representational pieces are underpinned
with good draftsmanship, allowing the viewer's eye to get right in among the squares,
streets, and alleyways of many towns and cities at home and abroad. Once such subjects
have been recorded by a sketch done on location, often in watercolour, or by some
of Don's own photgraphic material, they are brought home and worked up into the more
permanent medium of studio oil paintings. The richly expressive textures of oils
also obviously lend themselves to depicting New Zealand landscapes
